I got my first licensed in 1952 while I was in junior high school. From then until in 1962, I operated mostly 80 and 40 CW. From 1962 until 1989 I was inactive. I decided to get back on the air so I could talk to my dad K9HQU (SK), my brother KN4WZ, and my uncle WBØNZD.

In 1990, I worked my first DX. Later that year I broke my first pileup. I was so excited that my wife threatened not to let me ham anymore just before bedtime. I have calmed down a little since then. Also that year, a friend suggested that I should upgrade to Advanced Class. I enjoyed studying for the test and before I took the test, I decided I would try to eventually upgrade to Extra Class. Since it had been many many years since I had taken a CW test, I signed up for the Extra test so I could see what a 20 WPM code test was like. I knew I would fail but so what. Well much to my surprise, I passed the code and then somehow also passed the Extra theory. I found that the Extra Class license allowed me to go to the frequencies where much of the DX hangs out.

I'm not a contester, but do prowl contests, especially the big phone contests, for new countries (entities) and band countries.
